Default Speedo Issue (Blinkers, rpm needle)

Hi guys,

I have an issue with the speedo or some wiring, not sure which one it is.

When I turn any of the turn signals on, they both flash (on the cluster, but outside they work normal) and my rpm needle jumps up and down until I turn the blinkers off.

Also, what size are the cluster bulbs (very top ones). I took bulbs from 4 different 240's from a junk yard and they are all the same but don't fit on my cluster? They are orange color but they are too small for mine.

I can post pictures later if needed.

Thx,
Alex

are we supposed to guess what year/model this is ?

the turn signal problem quite likely could be either the turn signal switch, or a ground in the dashboard. but again, what year/model?

Sorry I always forget. This forum should seriously look into adding one field where our location and join date is for us to input the car model ...

My car is 1988 240DL...I changed the blinker riley and the light riley (red one behind/below the cluster) and nothing changed.

I'd be checking those grounds... IIRC (don't have the books in front of me), a 240 has two main grounds in the cabin, on either side of the transmission hump, just about where the center console meets it, and under the carpet.. I think if you remove the bezel around the shifter, you can access them. shoudl be a bunch of brown wires under a hex head screw. one ground is used for 'signal' stuff, the other for 'power' stuff, this keeps the electrical noise and crosstalk to a minimum.

So the orange one is too small for the whole in the speedo, the brown one is the one that fits. Every single 240 I ever took bulbs from, were orange. Not sure how is mine brown and larger than every other one...

those brown ones, is that a wedge base bulb in a holder? if so, that IPD bulb is likely the right one.

the third picture down i believe those come in one piece and 2 are located at the top of the cluster. those are the "expensive" ones...

The last picture (in previous post), orange bulb socker, does not fit in the opening you see in the same picture(top of the cluster), its too small. The brown one fits perfect. But I cant find the brown ones anywhere.

I tried to pull the bulb out of the brown one and it wont come out, while the orange one comes out easy.

So I checked my grounds yesterday and they seem ok...Nothing in the passanger side. Just the larger nut with nothing on it.

Driver side...

Harness next to it...What is this brown wire not hooked up to anything...

And last thing I noticed is this sensor/switch attached to the top of the brake pedal...Nothing is pluged in it...But I see this loose wires above it...one brown and one is part of purple and blue wire cluster or something...Anybody has any idea what should be plugged to that brake pedal sensor? Is that the reason I dont have my reverse lights maybe?

Somebody messed with the wires on this car I think and I really wanna fix it but I suck at it, I can do mechanical work but when it comes to wiring I am not that great ... So any input will be helpful!

is that brown with a grey stripe? only brown wire i'm finding in the wiring diagrams thatt might be anywhere near there is for the seatbelt warning, connected to the latch switches and the rear warning light.

the reverse switch is on the transmission shifter in the center hump... that blue-yellow + black wire with the one grey connector behind your brown wire are to that switch. the blue+blue and blue-yellow wire in the other grey connector are for the park-neutral starter lockout switch, if you have a automatic, since theres' a loop-back plug in there, I'm going to assume you have a stickshift ?

those wires near the brake pedal might be for the cruise control, hard to say. cruise on these is a vacuum module with s short bowden cable that actually pulls on the gas pedal, and the brake pedal releases the vacuum causing it to let go.

The brown is straight brown wire...And seat belt warning light does go on.

Yes its a manual transmission.

My cruise is not working and previous owner did tell me that its not working since they have some problems with it when its hooked up.

Idk, really wonder what happened to this volvo, its been through a lot...I will have to look for somewhere else I guess to find the solution to my crazy blinkers, no reverse, etc... Thx
