Split hose...did I do the right thing?

Split hose...did I do the right thing?
Greetings,
I noticed that this hose on my 240 (non turbo) was retracted from the 'nipple' which is on the intake manifold. It was barely hanging on it. Upon inspection I noticed it was split almost 1 inch long at the end. My reflex was to cut it where it was split and put it back in place.
Did I do the right thing or was this hose split purposely because of something to do with the EVAP system?
