Stalling 86 240 dl
i recently bought an 86 240 DL automatic, starting a few days ago i am having issues with the car sputtering, not dying completely when i initially press the gas to go and while i am driving it is like the fuel is cutting out.
I have spark and have checked the coil distributor, FPR and all wiring.
I am starting to get frustrated and dont want to replace a fuel pump if that's not the issue.
Any ideas???

Hi redbottle,
I suggest Idle Air control valve (no leaks, clean it out),
Flame trap PCV (good seal connections, cleared enough to allow air to flow through, connection to throttle body).
Not in Reverse? Hmmm.... Safety switch wiring around shifter getting pinched? But it's a '86. Don't think it has neutral switch.
What else? Crank Position Sensor! Exposed wiring touching metal in Drive gears but not when in reverse. Look for it on top of and to the rear of engine on top of trans. bellhousing and under the firewall. One bolt, 10mm. These CPS wires wear through the insulation very often.
Seen it happen, causing the condition you describe, on 4 different model year 240s.
Best of success,
Brandon

Have you changed the plugs, distributor cap, rotor. What do the spark plugs look like? Are they black and sooty, or gray and dry? If they are black its running rich. If they are gray its not the plugs. I am working thru an issue similar to yours with my 91 940. Try this: with the engine running unplug one injector wiring at a time and listen for a drop in rpms, then plug it back in. If one injector is plugged the engine will not drop rpms hardly at all. Also take a long handled screwdriver and touch the outside of each injector with the blade of the screwdriver, put our ear on the other end and you should hear a clicking, if it clicks the injector coil is working. You can also remove one spark wire at a time (with the engine running) from the spark plug to see if its a plug issue. Its cheaper that taking it to a mechanic. Also look for cracked vacuum lines or disconnected lines. On the fuel injectors: You can replace them yourself. I would say more but will wait for your next post. Good Luck!
