Do the headlights dim when you turn the key to start?

Lights may dimm a little, but not much. Battery is brand new, alternater should still be good. How can I tell if the starter or solenoid is going or gone...

If the starter is drawing current, the headlights should go out or almost completely so while attempting to engage the starter. If they don't dim, the starter is not receiving current. Even if the starter is jammed, it will dim the headlamps.

When a story starts like this, anything could have happened...

Is this an automatic? Could be the Neutral Safety Switch next to the gear selector.

Of course, this is a 940 we're talking about, so I'm not sure if those were as much of a problem as the 240 Safety Switches can be.

If the solenoid is bad, the starter should spin (make noise). you may try giving the starter a whack-it's been known to work...

Basically, the solenoid is an electro magnet that when activated causes the starter motor gear to engage with the flywheel/flex plate. When the starter gear engages, it closes contacts within the starter to activate the starter motor causing it to spin. Therefore, the starter will not spin until the solenoid has engaged.

If banging on the starter causes it to engage and work again, it sounds like your solenoid is bad. That is, assuming that you have checked the connections to the starter and made sure they are all tight and clean of corrosion.

Good luck

I got a used but tested one on ebay for around 40 (risky, I know) paid about 30 for tools at Harbor freight (needed a 1/2" u-joint and the long extensions) and used about 2.5 hours of my saturday. About 2 of those hours were spent trying to get at that dang top bolt.

So it sounds like you got a pretty good deal.
