Default sticky automatic transmission shifter button

Every morning and when I leave the car sitting for a couple hours I turn the car on and when I press the automatic transmission button to shift out of the neutral it takes one or more press. Any clues???

Clean the button, it's all gummed up.

Default Hi pierse

I'm looking for a diagram for a 1988 volvo 740 auto shifter... Like a factory diagram... I'd like to order some parts for mine and I think a diagram would help a lot.

I'm having to press down on the shift button while turning the ignition key to start the car... I have to wiggle the shifter at the same time too...
I replaced the Neutral safety switch.. I'm not sure what could be creating the problem... Any help would be appreciated...

per your symptoms, I suspect what you will have to do is, take it apart and figure out whats worn out. my guess is, the bushings that the shift lever pivots on, like 7 and 17 in that drawing. I believe to completely disassemble it, you'll need to go under the car, and disconnect the shift rods 22 and 26 via shafts #10, then the whole shifter assembly including the cup 5/6 its in should lift out so you can further disassemble it.
