Hey guys ... sometimes when I'm driving I hear a loud noise from my rear end followed by a bad smell. Anyone know what that could be? Thanks.

your rear end or the car's rear end? My thought at first was fart as well. Sorry. xD

I actually had a similar problem. I heard some clunking, grinding/scraping type noises from the rear of the car and it also smelled bad. What I found was that the brake material had de-laminated from the parking brake shoes and was grinding itself up.

Since the parking brakes are actually inside the hub of the rear discs, you need to removed the rear disc (and caliper) to inspect.

 

Hahaha - that is EXACTLY what I was thinking when I read the OP. I'm glad somebody else said it first.


Describing the sound, and the smell, would help a lot - both from the car, not the rectal area. A "pop" might indicate a backfire. A "rumble" might indicate a brake dragging.

 

What seems strange is it happens after I eat tacos.
