Default Stuck head bolt

my 2.1 has a head bolt that refuses to budge all the other one were bears but came loose the one just will not budge. I dont want to break it off and have to drill it out. I was thinking of just drilling the head of the bolt off and that would give me some bolt to work with and mabe get it out that way. any yahs or nays on that Idea sounds good but it may not be.

Are you taking the head off or just replacing the bolts? I went through the same thing but I forced the bolt and of course SNAP - there is a nice long post about my adventure, and eventual success getting it out- I was replacing the head.

If you're taking the head off and you can get the head of the bolt off you should be able to just pull the head off the block (I think). Then you'd have the whole bolt to work with, minus the head of the bolt. Then you should be able to throw some PB Blaster at it.

If you're just replacing the bolts, not too sure. Some heat on the block where the threads are might be able to get the threads to break the bond.

Worst case scenario read "nuclearsel's" post and you can pick up good info on removing a broken head bolt

Try one of those small tools with the small cut-off wheels and take off the head of the bolt then pull off the head...I think the hood is propped high enough and not get in the way once you pull off the head.
Then apply a penetrating oil or spray to the bolt and let it soak.

I was thinklng I could take a drill the same size or slightly smaller and drill the head of the bolt off and take the head off and then get the bolt out after a good soaking in PB blaster. That would be the easier than getting it out after its broken off at the block which is what will probably happen.

note those are hardened bolts, a regular HS drillbit won't hardly scratch them.

you'll need a carbide or similar bit to drill them out.

btw, kroil >> pb blaster, if you can find it.

I'd soak the thing in PB blaster or whatever you like, then wait as much as possible while you keep soaking it, then heat it if possible, then use an impact wrench. Cutting the head is silly, then you will have a stuck stud with nothing to hold onto, how are you get that off?

Pierce is correct those are hardened bolts. And yes read my posts first, it was a fiasco for me.

I ended up getting machinist's carbide straight fluted that worked but mine was flush with the block.

yes I read your post and thats what I'm trying to avoid. I was thinking the bolt doesn't bottom out in the hole and with the head off the presure of being torqued down would make it easier to remove also I could get better access to the threads for soaking and use big vice grips to work the stud.

Got it out . Lots of PB and several good smacks with a big hammer and it finaly popped loose. I talked to the local auto machine shop and they said the use an Impact driver to get them out but sometimes a few good smacks with a hammer works just as well.

DAMN!

I didn't even think about the impact hammer/wrench, I wasn't saving the bolt or the head that might have worked fine and saved me lots of time.
