I swear by Mobile 1 on my 1996 960 model. I change the oil every 10K miles, and replace oil filter every 5K. No problem.
You can switch over to the synthatic oil. Provided you have no oil leak which may force you to refill with $5 a quarts every couple of thoudand miles.

Thanks for the input. I switched over to Mobil 1 a couple of weeks ago and the car does seem to run quieter already. Ed

I too have a 87 740 with just over 200k. I tried synthetic oil once and then following the STRONG suggestion of my long term mechanic, went back to simple junk oil! The car seems to run well under either. The mechanic's suggestion to use the regular oil had great reasons at the time but I cannot remember what those reasons were. I have too many miles on me....memory goes first.

Ironic, I talked to my mechanic and he wondered why I had not switched earlier. The car does seem to be running smother and the oil drip that I did have seems to have gone away. since I just changed the oil to synthetic I am going to wait till about 3k miles change the oil filter and see how much crud is in the filter. Then add some AUTO.rx and run that treatment through it. The stuff on the autorx web site has been impressive and I am not to sure on how the car was treated prior to my purchase but gageing from the amount of oil that was in the engine compartment not to well.

One of the biggest adavantages of synthatic oil is. it does not lose its viscosity at tempretures above 200F degree. Organic ones do lose that quality at 180F, affecting lubrication. Also, less frequent oil change, thus less cost to maintain.
