Temperamental transmission safety release

Temperamental transmission safety release
Hey -
I have a '92 245 automatic. After sitting for awhile, usually overnight, it takes a few minutes to get it into gear. I'm guessing there's a safety switch connected to the brake that must be sticking. Does that sound right? And if so, is it something I can access and replace myself? I looked up under there with my trusty WD-40 can in hand, but couldn't really see an obvious switch.
Thanks.
Jeff

There is a solenoid that sticks but it has a manual release inside the cover.

Are you refering to this:
Condition: The gear selector can not be moved from the P position
The gear selector is locked in the P position. To release the selector, the ignition must be switched on (ignition key in position II) and the brake pedal must be depressed.
Depress the brake pedal
Select a gear
Release the brake pedal
If the gear selector cannot be moved, check fuses 7 and 12.
P-position lock
(SHIFTLOCK RELEASE)
Manually releasing the gear selector
If the car's electrical system is not functioning, the gear selector must be released manually. The catch is located under the brushes in the gear shift cover (see illustration).
Push the catch gently to the left.
