RE: temperature sensor
If the temp sensor is faulty it will send wrong informationto the control module and thatcould affect mpg. It is located on the left side of the engine on the intake manifold.
Other sensors - ABS front; ABS rear; Airflow meter; Brake fluid level; Bulb failure; EGR Temperature; Impulse sensor (RPM/TDC); Knock sensor; Speedometer sensor; SRS Crash sensor and Throttle position sensor.
Your car is fitted with a diagnostic unit in the engine compartment. With this you can check fuel and ignition systems for problems. This includes the temp sensor.

Scroll down till you find it. It is headed 740 but applies to 240, 740, and 940.

RE: temperature sensor
The official Volvo line is 'do not use oil additives'. My opinion is with a car that age and possibly high miles go for it.
I prefer the Molyslip brand as opposed to those that are supposed to stay in the engine even when you do an oil change. I could never work that one out - how does it know to stay there when all the oil goes?
