Default Is there someone that has actually disabled the 940 Daytime Running Lights

Hello all. I've searched for a couple days and found many who want to disable the drl feature but no one that has actually done it. I have a '95 non turbo 940 and want to disable the drl feature.

I realize there are folks out there that like the drl feature and want to tell me why I shouldn't disable them and that's cool but please leave those comments out of the replies. I don't like drl and want to disable them. Everyone does their own thing right? I'd like to find someone that has actually successfully disabled their drls.

Thanks in advance for info.

k, it looks like they changed the switch and the wiring around the switch

the UK version, you can pull a fuse and disable the DRLs, but the US version doesn't have that option.

hmm. I won't VOUCH for this, but comparing the schematics for the 1995 940 and my 1992 (which doesn't have DRL), the big difference is the 95's headlight switch has an additional pin 5. this has two yellow-white wires connected to it, and I *think* that if you disconnect these two wires from the switch, but leave them connected to each other, that should disable the DRL's. its possible you'd also have to swap for an earlier headlight switch, I dunno for sure without doing a whole lot more circuit analysis than I feel like doing right now..

Thanks for the info. I've checked out some diagrams. It looks like if I disconnect those two wires you're referring to it will kill the headlight part of the drl. I think the park lights would still be on. My goal is no lights on.

I'm hoping to find someone who has already disconnected their drl so I can "pick their brain" with some questions. I'm going to do some physical testing and poking this coming weekend.

Thanks again.

I've never seen parking lights come on with DRL's, but I guess there's always a first time.

on my 1996 Volvo 850, there was a little screw slot in the lower corner of the headlight switch 'block', simply turning this screw 90 degrees disabled the DRLs'.

Yes my headlights and park lights come on with the ignition. I used to have an 850. I think someone must have already adjusted the screw next to the headlight switch because I don't remember having driving lights on it.

I have an idea for an automatic lights on/lights off system for my 940. I'll have to do some testing to see if it'll work.

if you swapped the parking light switch with an older 940 that didn't have DRL's, *and* leave pin 5 disconnected as described above, THEN it should work.

Thumbs up

I thought about using a switch from an older 940 as you've pointed out. I'm currently bidding on a 940 switch similar to mine to do some testing on. Using a 2nd switch, I won't risk destroying the one from the car.

I'm also very interested in doing an auto lights on/off circuit. The auto circuit will accomplish disabling my drl stuff automatically so I'll probably just go that route. I have that part pretty much figured out and can use my existing 940 headlight setup to get it done. I've worked it out on paper but haven't physically tested it yet. Of course once I complete it I'll post the info on the forum.

I found a headlight switch from a '91 740 that worked perfectly. DRL's are no more. The 740 switch doesn't have the extra terminal that provides the drl function. Thanks for everyone's input.

Hi. I am on a similar quest to kill the DRL's on my 1995 940 turbo sedan. Can you give me the part number for the 740 switch that solved this issue for you? And/or a link to a similar part on ebay? I appreciate your time.

Really any 740 or 940 pre '95 switch should do the trick.
