Hi all, I recently purchased a 1992 Volvo 240 Wagon with the stock roof rack pre-installed on it.

I have a set of Thule mountain bike fork mount racks and am wondering if I can connect these to the stock Volvo rack, or am I going to have to pull off the stock rack and replace everything with gutter-clamp 3rd-party racks?

My stock roof rack looks kinda like this:


And the Thule fork mount rack looks like this:

 

you don't have to pull the racks, just add roof rack clamps and crossbars. Yakima or Thule provide these (i'd assume you'd get Thule since you already have thule components) and they just attach to the roof rack that is already on your car.

personally, I wouldn't put bikes on the factory racks at all, especially on an older car, they just aren't that strong. I'd get some raingutter towers for thule or (my preference) yakima rails, and then mount your bike racks on those... the gutter-clamped rails should clear over the top of the factory rack.
