a thump when braking
Allright the idle is running high and the car wants to push the vehicle easily as if its getting more gas then i think i'm giving it. the problem seems to be when i brake. not when i brake lightly and not when i brake real hard, just when i brake moderatly under normal braking conditions. The thing is, i feel a small thump just before the car comes to a complete stop. I feel as if there is something wrong with the brakes, but then I'm thinking it is something to do with the transmission. as if the high idle isn't allowing the torque converter to let the transmission go until im almost stopped and then it lets go. well thats my current feeling.
any insights would be appreciated.

I would check to make sure that torque converter has enough fluid in it. They rarely leak but that migh be yur problem. How high is it idleing? You should fix the high idle problem and then you will know if that is your problem. What year and model is your car?
the details can be found under the thread "high idle" started by me in this forum. Anyway, its a '89, 740gl with a 230f engine and at start up it is about 1250 rpm and after it warms up it drops down to 750 rpm. The thump isbarely noticeblewhen the idle drops to normal rpms and is in gear. It is non existant in neutral. If the engine is warm the vehicle doesn't go into high idle. my feelings are that it is the coolant temperature sensor or the MAF. It might still be a vacumn leak, but I don't see any loose hoses.
please post your thoughts onthe high idle problem under the previosuly mentioned thread.
BTW thanks for the advicefunny guy it is much appreciated.
