Ticking sound from AW70 increasing W/ speed
Hey guys.
Recently did the gearbox mount on my 92 240.
I also intended replacing the tail shade bushing inside the rear housing - till I realised I was kind of over my head.
I removed the driveshaft, removed the 6 bolts holding the rear housing, undid the locking tab on the 30mm lock nut - put it in Park and began swinging with a 1/2” breaker bar. Nothing moved. I read it could snap the locking pin so thought it best I just re assemble and just do the mount.
At this point - I realised I didn’t mark the drive shaft (or when I did remember - I can’t be 100% certain it hadn’t moved). I noticed there was 2 pin punch holes on both the drive shaft and the flange (there is evidence someone else has been in this part of the car) so I trusted their marks (as mine didn’t align perfectly) and put the drive shaft on after replacing the mount.
Topped it up with a different ATF than what was in it and took it for a drive.
I noticed a ticking / clicking/ tapping sound (similar to a relay click or starter motor click) which increased in speed as the car increased with speed. Putting it in neutral didn’t stop the sound, and it stayed constant on or off power.
It was noticable above 40km/h and increased in ticking as speed increased.
I checked the level after the drive - it’s high.
Other than that - the ATF in it was recently replaced with the mesh filter.
Anyone have experienced this?
should I drain all the ATF and replace?
Could it be the drive shaft carrier bearing?
will too high level cause this ticking?
Could the drive shaft be out of alignment and cause the ticking even though there is no vibrations?
Thanks in advance
