Timing Belt tools
89 240DL, planning a timing belt, tensioner, oil seal job, heard I need:
Cam Seal tool
Crank seal tool
Cam sprocket holding tool
Crank pulley holding tool
in addition to the belt, seals, tensioner (other stuff?)
is there anywhere I might be able to borrow/rent these tools? Are they specific to Volvos or rather generic? rather not drop 200$ on tools for this. thanks! Dave

The drift for the front crank seal is 5283. The SPX number is 9995283, the 999 prefix just means Volvo. The drift for the cam shaft and intermediate shaft is 9995025 from SPX.
I don't know what the cam sprocket holding tool is.
If you have an automatic tranny you need some way of holding the crank in order to properly torque the pulley nut when putting it back on. The rope trick works pretty good. Or you can buy the tool from FCP I think. #5284.
Are your front seals leaking? I wouldn't bother replacing them if they're not leaking.

This talks about the Volvo specific seal press tools:

You might be able to find generic seal press tools for rent *if* the threaded bolt is the correct pitch/diameter ... I've always used PVC pipe which is somewhat risky.

bubba- yeah, I think every seal that thing has is leaking: cam, crank and rear main. i've done just about every kinda repair to all my cars over the years, but have never done a timing belt. I'll run those numbers through spx or fpc, see what I'm talking in bucks. Dave
have never used any special tools - except the crank lock tool on the automatics. (and there's a way to get the crank nut off w/o that - but it's a bit dangerous in my opinion!) I bought the crank lock tool from IPD and it was well worth the $30 I paid. Small flat blade screw drive handled carefully is an easy way to remove cam, intermediate, and crank seals. As for pressing in the new seals - not that difficult if you don't get in a hurry.
