I am replacing the seals and timing belt on a 1993 240. Using a Federal Mogul 1172 crank seal.

The one I took out was installed in the ball park to this depth. Dont know what I was thinking. After installing it I am now having installers remorse feeling I should have installed it pushed in just far enough to clear the casing taper.

On that seal do you guys used silicon on the outside of the seal. Seemed very loose fitting to me. Sorry for the newb questions I just want to make sure and do it right the first time.

Just a little too far. It'll live
Just even with bottom of the chamfer. No sealant, just a little oil ID and OD.
