Torque Wrenching crankshaft bolt...is it absolutly needed?
Can I just tighten that bugger dang tight and-then-some and be on the road? Or do i wait six months for a torque wrench to arrive and torque the bolt to 44 ft-lbs and and additional 90 deg for good measure?
Personally, the only time I use a torque wrench on a crank bolt is when I'm building a motor.
On the car, I use an impact wrench and it gets tightened a good bit more than specs of 44'lbs plus 60 degrees. The main thing is to get it good and tight. A crank bolt falling out or even being loose can cause the key way to wear and in extreme cases, necessitate a new crankshaft.
