Transmission ?
That is really low miles. I went down a road I don't go on often yesterday and noticed a 740? wagon at this repair place out in the weeds...looks real clean. Have to stop and inquire. Why are you selling? That seems like a good one to drive another 200k.
Update, so I changed the filter and fluid and that did not cure the tranny problem. However, within the last few months it has started working properly again. Something must have been sticking or hung up or a check ball went back to its home or a Volvo guy stopped by my place and waved his magic wand over it at night. Still working fine and running like a champ. I did move the tranny cable manually and could feel the detent mentioned when doing that.
There is a used 70 series on cl in Washington D.C. 1992 Volvo 240 Transmission Assembly Only 118568 Miles $350 (Brandywine, MD.)
on all used transmissions PULL THE PAN. If it has metal, water, or trash in the bottom pass. Do so before money changes hands, and if they won't let you there is a reason.
Volvo odometers are often broken for decades so caveat emperator.

Back form the dead....so my transmission problems have increased. It slips/freewheels past 3000 rpms under load, even going up a hill it is slipping and barely goes above 50 mph, making it unsafe. I am going to buy one from ebay for around 350-450...if I can find one. The id tag is on the pan /drivers side, by the fill tube? I think it is a AW71, not AW71L. but that should be on the trim tag, correct? Do I need a tranny from a turbo car as opposed to N/A car? Guess I will pull the engine/tranny out all at once and do the timing belt and fix some oil leaks as well.
a turbo should have an AW71... the locking version was never offered in USA on turbos. The 71 has the same gear ratios as the AW70 but is stronger, to handle the additional torque of the turbo motor (nearly 200 ft-lbs).
Hello,
I have a 1991 740 T sedan. It has 187k. I went to pass someone yesterday and it kicked down and then back to 4th with a hard shift. Went to pass another car and it kicked down but then felt like it was slipping and would not shift back into the next gear, 4th. I let off the gas and it did go back into 4th/OD. While considering whether to take it to a BMW Repair Near Me, is the tranny done for? The kickdown cable looked ok, I did not disconnect it. The transmission appears to be functioning properly outside of this issue. I have changed the fluid via the small drain plug on the pan, about 2 quarts at a time, at various times since owning, last time about three months ago. The fluid level is good, the first thing I checked when I got home. Transmission is an AW-71.
Thanks,
Mike
