Default Transmission fluid not going down dipstick. Is there a breather vent?

I'm just wrapping up an complete engine rebuild. While I had the transmission out I changed the filter so between that and taking it off the block I know there isn't much fluid, but when I went to refill it through the dip stick tube it overflowed all over the place. The dipstick goes down into it, and there's no kinks in the tube so it doesn't seem like there is anything blocking it. Is there a breather hose/vent that I need to open? or was I just pouring it in too fast? I was late at night when that happened so we didn't have it in us to trouble shoot. It's down at my friends house or I'd just try again with a very little at a time, but I figured I'd ask here before I went back as well to make sure I wasn't missing anything.

Possible Solution:
For anyone else who comes across this the method is loosen the top transmission line on the radiator and use that as the breather. Haven't gotten back to the car to test this yet, but I found a lot of different people saying the same thing online.
