Default Transmission damage?

This is for my 240 Volvo 1989 DL. About 3 months ago my mechanic told me that I had a tranmission leak in the seals and he said he fixed it. I don't think he did, I think he lied because he was so booked up with other jobs. A couple of days ago my transmission started to shift funny. So I checked the fluid level and it was almost empty. I refilled it and it's a slow leak so I am going to take it in on my next day off to get a price qoute on fixing it(diff. mechanic this time). My question is, is there any permenant damage in my transmission from driving it with so little fluid? Now that I refilled it, it seems to shift ok but maybe once in awhile it might seem to shift a little hard(seems very neglable so it might be in my head). What should I do now? I would hate to spend a few hundred dollars to fix the seals if later on the whole transmission might need to be rebuilt. But then again, I don't want to rebuild the whole transmission if it doesn't need it. I'm already in debt from previous repairs. What do I do????

I would say it is about a 50/50 chance. I would have the leaks fixed and drive it till it messes up.

If I did have to rebuild the Transmission, about much does that cost?

Man, I'm so messed up and upset. What happened was when I first bought the car my mechanic told me all the things wrong with it- water pump leak, fuel pump leak, and transmission leak. I had it all fixed at once. When I went to pick up the car I noticed I wasn't charged for the transmission seal leak. I asked him if it got done and he said he took care of it and there was no charge. Do you think he really fixed it? What are the chances that he fixed it and another leak came about afterwards?

Possible he fixed it or lied about it Im really not sure.
Hard to say.

Everytime we reseal one we clean it up really good.
