How well built are the transmissions in these? I'm planning on buying 1993 940, its an automatic and I hasn't moved for a year or two, and I was just going to impulse buy it without even test driving it because it needs a little work to get running again. So the main question is should I risk buying it without driving it first???

 

I assume it is an automatic since I don't think there were many 940s imported to the US that had a manual transmission. The automatics used in the 940 is the same transmission used in most 740s and 240s. It is a robust transmission that with marginal maintenance should last upwards of 250k miles. Check the oil in the trans. If it is black or smells burnt then it is most likely toast. If it is pink or even brown - it probably is ok.

 

Yeah it's an automatic, I think I mentioned that but I can't remember haha. So do these models have the AW transmission in them though right? I've heard they were much more reliable than the other transmissions, and thanks!

 

No 940 were never imported in the US with manual trans. The Aisin Warners in the 940 are great. They are Toyota built and as good as you get in an auto tranny. If the fluid is changed every 40-50 K, hardly ever any problems. If never changed, well...
Easy to change, too...

yeah, AW is Aisin-Warner as Lev says, which started as a joint operation of Borg-Warner and Toyota.... The AW70 used on the non-turbos was pretty much the same transmission used on Toyota 2x4 pickup trucks in the 80s and 90s, also on RWD Turbo Supras and such.... The AW71 used on turbo 740/940 is a heavier duty version of the same thing. The 16V/DOHC 940's used a AW72 which is the same as the AW71 but with different gear ratios, better suited to the higher revving B234F 16V engine
