Question Transmission Swap

My dad and I bought an awesome 89 automatic LH 2.4 240 with no rust and a rusted 86 4-speed (with OD) manual LH 2.2 240 for parts. We want to take the automatic transmission out of the '89 and replacing it with the M46 transmission from the '86. So far, we have removed the rear axels from both cars as well as the m46 transmission, shifter and clutch pedal from the rusted car. I have also removed some of the electrical relays from the rusted car because I know there are a few relays unique to manual 240s (m46 overdrive relay, gear shifter indicator relay). I only have access to the parts car for another couple of weeks - I have no idea how old the clutch is, but I'm thinking I need to grab it as well as the flywheel. Is there anything I should grab off the parts car while I still have access to it (I'm a student trying to keep my budget as low as possible).

If anyone has done an auto to manual transmission swap on a 240 before, let me know what you think.

Thanks!

You will need an LH 2.4 flywheel from a 1989+ manual car to get that working. Automatics have a flexdisk instead o a flywheel. you will also need to grind/cut a notch in the bellhousing where the Crank Position Sensor of the LH2.4 engine goes.

Thank you for this info we definitely wouldn't have known that... not too many youtube videos on 240 transmission swaps.

The 89 is at 150k miles right now hopefully she gets to 500k as well!

We've taken the starter off the parts car as well. Does this allow us to use the flywheel from the parts car or do we still need to go buy an 89+ one?

this has nothing to do with the starter.... the flywheel for an LH 2.4 car has timing holes drilled into it that are picked up by the crank position sensor, LH 2.2 cars don't have these timing holes, they instead get their timing from a hall sensor in the distributor. an automatic LH 2.4 car doesn't have a clutch style flywheel, instead it has a 'flexidisk' that mates to the automatic's torque converter.

In addition to what pierce has mentioned, be sure to take all the wiring harness bits an pieces from the '86 that attach to the transmission. That includes the selector switch and back up switch.and overdrive wiring that goes up into the console. You will also need to buy a NEW ( don't try to remove the used one from the '86) pilot bearing that you auto-equipped one won't have. I would recommend a new clutch and pressure plate and throwout bearing. A clutch alignment tool should be obtained also; may come in the new clutch kit

Oh, one more thing. Pretty sure the driveshaft lengths are different t between the manual with OD and the automatics. Save the driveshaft from the manual car.

yeah, they are, and the attachment of the shaft at the transmission end is different too, using a flexdisk rather than a U joint. Drive shafts are two part, and balanced as a whole, if you have to separate the shaft halves, make sure you mark the splines so they go back together in the same orientation.

I would also plan on a new driveshaft center bearing and bushing, a new flexdisk (only manuals have these), and a new transmission mount, might as well change the engine mounts while you're in there. I think someone already suggested replacing the rear main seal on the engine.
