Default What do I need to manual swap my 740?

I have a 1990 740 Wagon and I want to swap the AW71 for an M46 trans. What parts would I need to replace, as in what wouldn’t allow the transmission to swap in? Thanks.

you'll need the entire clutch pedal assembly from a similar vintage 740, you'll need the manual OD relay and rewire that section of the relay panel, you'll need the manual transmission itself, and the shifter, of course... you'll need the flywheel from a 1990+ 740/940 manual engine to replace the flexiplate on your automatic engine.... you'll need the drive shaft from the manual too, as they are a different length and have a different attachment on the transmission side

I'd recommend getting a complete manual car, parking it on stands next to your car, so you can swap parts across.

Note those M46's are not very sporty.

thank you, I know they're not sporty, I'm not set on an m46, Im considering an m47 as well but I hear those aren't as well built as the m46... what parts could I salvage from a manual 240?

the M47 5-speed is weaker, was never sold for use with a turbo as it won't hold up under the torque of the turbo. and its not any sportier than the M46.

you'll need the exact same list of stuff, minus the overdrive relay... oh, and a 240 shifte lever assembly probably won't mount cleanly in a 740, so you'll need to hack that part. and the 240's M47 axle is the wrong length for the 740, so you'd need a 740/940 M47 axle, and I'm not sure they ever sold a 740 with a M47 so that might be a Unicorn part. the 240 cluitch pedal assembly won't fit in a 740, you'll need a pedal assembly from a 740 or 940.

the car I'm swapping it into isn't a turbo, would a driveshaft, clutch pedal assembly, and shift lever assembly from a 760 fit in a 740?they're basically the same car except the engine, correct?

they should.... note, however, starting somewhere the 760/960 *sedans* went to IRS and those likely have a different driveshaft.

the one I'm thinking of getting the parts from is a 760 wagon, would that work?

760 manual trans set up should work just fine in a 740, driveshaft is the same... Anyway, once they went to IRS, all 760/960 never had a manual tranny, at least not in the US. Volvo Non turbos went to M47 mid year 1987...
Hard to get a good used M47 anyway, they are weaker and harder to source used, I'd shoot for the M46.

note if the donor car is pre-1989, it will not have the flywheel notches for LH2.4 crank position sensor, nor will the bell housing have the cutaway for mounting the CPS. you'll need to get the flywheel from an 89+ non-turbo, or a 90+ turbo. This flywheel is on the engine crankshaft... automatics have a flexiplate instead of a flywheel, not compatible with a clutch.
