Um, the blower motor
Hi, all –*first time poster.
I have a 1990 740 GL that needs a new blower motor. So, two questions:
1. Has anyone here done this before and how long did it take?
2. Where can I find specific instructions about how to do it?
That's three questions, I guess. Anyway, I'm thisclose to taking it to PepBoys, but I thought I'd have my husband take a crack at it first. Any advice out there?

Ohh yeah and how to do it, you can do it from under the dash, but i heard you can pull out the glove box, remove the three bolts and swap the motors out and put it back in. Someone told me they one did it in a half hour. I did it by going up under the dash, live and learn.
adub- throw car away? thats a bit negative! I did the blower in my 240, yeah it was some work, but my knuckes healed up. 740s must be different. God, I'd never take anything to Pep Boys! Dave
I wish I'd read the Pep Boys comment before. I did take it to them, and their part doesn't fit. This is the fourth time I've bought a part that's allegedly for my car, only to find it's wrong. Has anyone else had this problem? Where can I find the right part for my car? And why is this so hard? I've tried AutoZone, Advance, NAPA, etc. The dealership want almost $300 for it! Any ideas about where to find the right part?
I just did this recently on my 89 740 gl and removed one from your year car at the junkyard along the way. One thing I noticed when I tried to grab a blower motor from the junkyard and grabbed a newer plastic one is you need to look and see if yours has a plastic mounting plate or a metal mounting plate. The plastic ones ( which I think yours will be ) will have a different bolting pattern than the older metal ones (what mine was) and should also have a 2 wire plug instead of a grounding connecting and a positive connection prong.
To install
You'll need to remove the small panel that is underneath the passenger side of the dash. Its about 2 feet by 1 foot of carpet/fabric covered particle board. There were a few plastic clips or machine screws if I remember correctly.
Once this is off, you will need to remove some of the trim where the passenger side door seals with the car. The rigid plastic piece that runs 1/2 way down the bottom front part of the door and the piece that runs along the front portion of the bottom of the door seal/running board need to be removed as well as a small plastic cover just to the right of where the passenger's feet rest (this covers a computer module)
Also remove the computer, there are a few star/torx screws here that will remove the metal bracketing and computer. (http://www.carbasics.co.uk/torx_4.jpg)
After the computer is removed you need to remove the bolts that secure the blower motor (in the most front right corner of the car under the dash) to the ventilation system. There are 3 possibly 4 or 5 small (8 or 10 mm) bolts that hold the motor in. One of them is probably hidden out of sight on the opposite side of the motor (its a pain to remove, I needed a universal joint socket http://www.hardwarestore.com/media/p...9_front200.jpg).
Once the motor is out, put the new one in (but not before attaching the wires and making sure it works) and follow the reverse directions to put the car back together. To be safe I'd reconnect the computer module before checking if it works.
This should help, I'm just recalling what I did to remove one from your year car at the junkyard, there may be small discrepencies but overall should be the same process.
Hope this helps
