Take a step backwards....jagsthatrun.

If it were me...V-6, or I-4. A Mustang Ecotec I-4 has 315HP

When you start to get that exotic it's likely you're not going to find something off the shelf. Have you tried to do a through online search to see if someone is offering anything for a particular engine ?

85-86 4.3...in the PU they came with factory headers, mechanical fuel pump, HEI and a Q-jet manifold. They will bolt in place of a SBC. In short, hook up the FP to a fuel line, and give the HEI 12V and you are in biz. And, being shorter, it would alleviate the cooling problems that they talk about.

I put a 2.6 Capri V6 in a Chevy LUV...it ran good. But, not great. I had a friend look at it. He had a Ford V-8 in a mini-PU. He said, after seeing all my room, "Maybe this is what I should have done."

In this day of 3.0, 3.8, and 4.0 V-6s. Many of em can be had w/a carb on them (80s and 90s Nissan and Toy 3.0s). Ranger, Tacoma, Titan, Nissan D21, they made millions of em.

Tight spots cause problems.
