Default Volvo 240 air-conditioning

Recently went to see a 1992 240 for sale. I live in AZ so good a/c is a must here. The car was great in every other way but the a/c barely cool. It is 115 degrees here now. The a/c system had been converted to R134a. The seller said the a/c in 240 Volvos was poor by design and the only way to improve it would be to go back to R12. What is the consensus? Is a R134a converted system capable of cooling in 115 degree heat? Maybe I should get a 740 or 940 if the a/c system is better?

our 1987 240 A/C sucked when new. the 740/940 are significantly better. late 940s are the best.
