Default Volvo 240 questions

Hello, I just got a volvo 240 as my first car,
I really love it and wants it back in shape
I have one question

1- my coolant is brown is that alright?

2- The car has been in an accident before me , and the bumper is out of the retainer clip, how can I put the bumper back in place ?

bumper out of the retainer clips

Thank you in advance for your help!

1. Brown coolant means there's some rust - since the car is new to you, do a drain, flush (with distilled water only) and refill with fresh coolant (go with a "green" coolant - avoid the dexcool orange). 50/50 coolant/water mix is standard but if you live in a very cold climate (like risk of deep below zero) ask around some local parts stores/shops if they recommend a 60/40 mix for extra protection.

As to the bumper, you need to see if any of the mounting/clip points are bent to know if it will simply reattach. Are any of the clip points torn or broken?

you need new headlights too. and that right one (left in the picture) is way misaligned.

hazed headlights like that throw a LOT of glare up into oncoming drivers faces and put less light down the road where you need it.

the aftermarket Depo brand ones work quite well, fit nicely.

you're also missing the trim above bumper, there's three pieces, one across the middle, and two 'hockey sticks' around the corners... those clips you see in the picture below the lights and grill are for holding this trim in place. I find the old clips are usually toast, they aren't expensive to replace

thank you so much for all of you for your answers! It is a great help.

to drain the coolant I simply have to put a bucket and open the coolant cap? No jacks necessary ? I will buy blucol 50/50 mix

thanks so much for the bumper trim info. I actually have those in the trunk!

i will buy new headlights. I really love the car and I want to keep it in the best condition.

I also have one of the trunk hydrolic Lyft broken. Not sure where to find that part...

and only have the valley key but I will contact the Volvo dealer ship.

thanks again so much for your knowledge and time.

parts catalog says thats 'spring' 1254057 (one on each side).

dealers say NLA, but folks online seem to be selling them. I know the wagons use a gas spring/lift, but I though the sedan trunk just had a spring inside a sleeve ?

missing the vent drain tube that runs through the trunk. any rain will just be directed into the trunk, rather than passing through.

oh very good point! should be a clear vinyl tube on that stub from the tray under the back window, which runs down to the bottom of the well behind the wheel well and pokes out a rubber lined hole. same thing on the other side. and if the car has a sunroof, there should be ANOTHER clear tube that comes down the "C" pillar, and joins this other tube with a 'Y" fitting.

thank you ! I think I actually have those :

see attached picture

i also have another question :

this hose seems to be unattached - what is it exactly and should I fix it ?

i am sorry for my naive questions. It is my first car and I ordered a repair guide book but it doesn’t come before 2 weeks.

i also saw that it was super wet right there. (It has been raining 3 days ago ) but there s no leak on the actual garage floor.

thank you all so much again.

yeah, that yellowing drain hose (they are suppsoed to be clear) goes on that stub coming off the tray

the engine tube goes on the stub off the exhaust shield that's right next to it, its function is to let the engine suck in pre-warmed air off the vicinity of the very hot exhaust manifold in very cold weather. it goes to the bottom of the aircleaner box, where there should be a thermostat controlled flap that closes if its not very cold out

your leak, hard to say from the picture... could be old oil, could be engine coolant. its odd that its on the inside of the fan shroud.

That has to be a radiator leak, the fan drawing it back, splashing it around...

do these have a fluid thermal clutch on the fan? (my Mercedes have those, I don't remember if the 240 did, my 92 740 was electric fan only)

I was thinking it *could* be leakage from said thermal fan clutch, if thats what it has. When the juice leaks out, the fan pretty much freewheels and doesn't move much air.

Yes, that's a fan clutch. But I doubt I leak from there is what we are seeing.

I'd drop the shield under the engine comparment, clean it up with degreaser, a brush, and hose, and use engine cleaner on anything looking greasy or wet under the hood, same thing, use a brush, then hose it off, let it dry. put it all back together, take it for a drive and look for NEW leakage.

I would also suspect front main seal leak. How about the oil trap screen.

Try some rubbing compound on the headlights, works good until you can get new lenses.

I wetsand them down with 1500 grade sand paper, then shoot them with clear lacquer, this lasts several years...
