Question Volvo 740 Shifting Problem - Help Please!

Hi- New to the forum - Need a bit of advice please!

I have a 1991 740 Wagon with 347,000 miles - original transmission. Yesterday it wouldn't shift on the highway. Under 50mph is ok, first two gears seem to work, but over 50 it stops shifting.

The car is otherwise "healthy" - regular oil changes, etc. No lights came on on the dash

I am taking it in to Volvo on Monday, but in the meantime, am panicking that I have a multi-thousand dollar problem on my hands.

Any thoughts on what this could be besides a major issue with the transmission itself? A cable? Hydraulic thing, etc.?

Thank you!!!

Thanks for responding! Research is good And you've given me some hope it might not cost a gazillion dollars to repair!

no the solonoid is pretty simple check out fcpgroton.com for the part. they usually have parts for pretty cheap and if not them then go to rockauto.com they have really decent prices.

Thank you - that was indeed it, as well as the relay. Unfortuantely I am not handy enough to fix the car myself...so $434.00 later...

But at least she is ok!

Thanks again for your input
