Default volvo 744 transmission cooler install Q

hi all and thanks in advance for any help...

I just picked up a used 1990 volvo 744 GL for what I think was a great deal..... I knew it would need a few lil things... and am learning a lot on this forum!
like that I did not need a tranny... just a kickdown cable yes that was good news

now I will be using this for my postal route .. rural carrier... until I sell my other car and get something else.... then the volvo will be my everyday car.... (I am new to post office).... anyway lol

I need to install a tranny cooler as running at low speeds most of the day will overheat the tranny..... so I bought a tranny cooler last night and am looking for the best install spot for this/ as the AC fan is in front of the radiator, and the engine fan on other side.....

do you need pics of under the hood? or any help is much appreciated!!!

I hate to pay someone for something I can or should be able to do!! as I got ripped off on the cable install.... I should have done it myself.... but shop convinced me it was a harder job then I thought

thanks again.... wendy

Some of the 740's already have a transmission cooler on them, or in the radiator I should say. Look for a couple lines going from the transmission to the front. If you don't have them and still want to install a tranny cooler. I would mount it behind the grille but in front of everything else.

Hi adub, thank you for the reply!

yes it did have lines running to radiator... but due to the long periods of time I am at such a low or rolling idle/speed... it was just not enough!
and after playing around I ended up putting it exactly where you said! behind the grill.

I will know tomorrow at work if this helped!!
and I am sure I will have more questions as I go along... I haven't had a volvo in about 10 yrs, but am so glad to have one again! this was a one owner car, the owner was a general in the air force meticulasly maintained at the dealer and has every receipt including oil changes from day one!! so I was not to worried about the 177,000 miles

this car is so clean I would swear it was newer, and he only asked 1500.00

thanks again

The stock cooler is pretty tiny, it's not adequate for anything other than mundane driving.
The trans cooler works well mounted to the back of teh AC condenser, you have to remove the engine fan and tilt teh radiator back to get it in there but it's definitely possible.
Then it sits behind the AC fan and also gets cooled by the engine fan, so it's very good.
Also flush your trans fluid whilst you are at it, perfect time to do it.

Regards, Andrew.
