Default Volvo got my Heart or Wallet?

Hello Everyone,

I received this gift of a 1983 244 DL. It was last owned by my friend's dad (who recently passed away.) My friend thought it would be a good car for my 15-year-old son who isn't driving yet. I also recently met the prior owner (who gave it to my friends dad). He told me a few stories about the vehicle and how they really loved it, and how all their kids learned to drive in it...

Since it didn't pass smog last year, the car has been sitting a while and really needs cleaning, engine work, etc. My son has started taking interest in it enough to help me clean it up and try to get it working right.

I have been poking around at forum sites and I figured that I will be needing help from everyone to get this sedan in shape so I started this thread to say hello. I have never worked on a Volvo before, but I have turned a few wrenches in my days. I hope with some sweat, luck, and a little help, I can make this thing work and have fun teaching my son about vehicles.

It runs, but I think I am hearing a giant sucking sound near my wallet.

Here is what it looked like after we cleaned it up. It still keeps sprouting tons of spider webs everywhere.

I will try to update as I go.

We had one just like it. Same color and interior. I just sold an almost complete set of OEM manuals on E-bay. You'll enjoy it and they are not that bad of a money pit. Good luck

I forgot to mention the shop manuals. A set came with the car, as did the original owners guide.

I haven' gone through them yet to see how helpful they are.

looks to be in pretty nice shape!
they are easy cars to repair, and there's a few on-line sites like fcp-groton, or ipd, that are great sources for inexpensive parts.

welcome to the club, enjoy the car, along with the father and son time working on the car!
