I am currently trying to swap my auto 740 with a manual m46/ preferably m47 trans, I am having issues finding what part of the vin denotes what transmission a car has, any help would be appreciated!

 

Sorry - don't understand what your question is.

You have an Auto trans and you want to put a manual in - either a m46 (4 speed with laycock overdrive) or you want to put the pure 5 speed (but less reliable unless the m46 overdrive is worn out!) transmission in.

What is your question? Can you determine what trans is in a car by the VIN - Maybe, but you are talking about a 40 year old car! Just go to the junkyard/seller and see what they have.

I have certainly changed an auto trans Volvo to a manual trans. It is easily possible (with many hours labor) - but it would be much harder to do as an individual - I am a shop owner with parts available and junk cars and contacts at the junkyard that can easily provide everything needed (at low prices) . As an average consumer unless you were really dedicated to this project (for some reason) at this age of the car it is not going to be a financially reasonable thing to do. -----------------------

This site has VIN decoding info but seems the tranny variations are not in the VIN.
