Default What is the correct filter for my AW70?

Hello there! I am looking to do a filter and gasket replacement on the transmission in my 1990 / 1991 volvo 240 GL wagon with a 2.3 liter B230F engine. As this is a non-turbo model I presume that the transmission is the aw70 model. Looking up types of filters i get two results:

One:

Two:

The description just says to note that are two different filters, and that it depends on transmission number. I cannot find anywhere to look up filter type given my transmission number, and I really do not want to take apart my tranny without a fresh filter to install.

Anyone who knows the difference between these two filters and which one is most likely to be in my brick?

Kind regards
Christian

Any reason why you are replacing your filter? Generally I never would touch those as they are just a screen. Unless the transmission was really neglected for a long time you really shouldn't need to bother. My last 240 was past 260k miles without ever removing the transmission pan.

what site are you shopping? Did you try Volvo friendly sites like IPD or FCP?

I am having some transmission problems, shifting into 4th gear seems to be a bit wonky - might also be the solenoid. - And then I just want to do it to be sure that all is well. :-)

That's ok, you can always email or chat with the US web stores to have them confirm a part number that fits your VIN and get a quot for shipping international without actually buying from them. That way you'd have the part number for a more local store.

If shifting into 4th gear is a problem it's more than likely the relay, solenoid or the wiring going to the solenoid. In the later years I think Volvo even stopped recommending the filter replacement since dropping the pan means removing the dipstick tube. Many times the tube is rusted to the pan risking damage if attempted to remove.

What condition is the trans fluid? Is it dark or cherry red. If it is dark your tranny is in need of a fluid change. You can do it via the transmission cooler tubes. You can find the procedures on the web. If you just drain the transmission via the pan you are only replacing 1/3 - 1/2 of the fluid. The rest remains mostly in the torque convertor.
