So my daughter blew a tire about 6 months ago, and the AAA guy on scene told me that all her tires looked bad (I was out of town). So I arranged for the car to be towed to a nearby tireshop where they replaced all 4 tires and did an alignment, etc.

Fast forward to today, my daughter is home from college for the holidays and driving the car again. She ran it into a curb and blew out one of the rear tires (yep, bent the wheel, too). ("Honest Dad, I was only going like 10 mph!")

I pull the bad tire/wheel off and go to swap out the spare and find that the spare is in shreds!

"WTF!" I think - "shouldn't the tire shop have checked and replaced that too!"

Well, I pull both the bad tire and the shredded spare, throw them into my truck and head to the same tire shop and read them the riot act.

Apparently those spares are completely unobtainable, and they don't sell them, nor can they get them. We don't have a Volvo dealer in town (nearest one is 100 miles away), and www.tirerack.com says they don't carry such an oddball tire.

So my long-winded question is this - where does one find a suitable spare tire for the 240 wagon??
The old one is market "155 R 15 90"

I want to replace it so she doesn't have this same problem again.

Aha! I figured out the answer to my own question. I got the replacement tire mounted on the 14" factory steel wheel, and just for laughs checked to see if it would fit in the spare location. INDEED IT DOES! So I have no idea why they put these stupid donut spares in there, but if you lose your Donut, you don't have to buy a $200 tire from the dealer - just get an OEM steel wheel and throw a regular tire on there and rotate it with your other tires...

 

yup, early on our 240 dinged a Corona alloy on a pothole, so we got a new one (insurance) and kept the old as a spare (its dinged but still round enough to hold air).

originally, the 240's could hold TWO full sized spares, one on each side, but the vapor recovery fuel filler pipe gets in the way of putting one on the right side.
