Default Where should my RPM's be??

I've already posted a previous thread regarding the funky shifting of my 1994 Volvo 940 non-turbo. Well today was the first time I drove the car on the interstate. (Bought sight unseen for $700) It hits 4th gear around 50 mph and while cruising at 70 it rides at 3K rpm. Is this normal? IDK cause this is my first Volvo and my first 4 cylinder car, so it might be. Just not sure

You have an AW 70 which is 3spd +OD, four speeds essentially... 3k rpm@70 is right, means that the OD is engaged... Does it downshift when pressing the button on the shifter? Does the OD light come on then? Hitting the fourth at 50 is a little high though, should shift into OD around 35-40... but as long as it does get there eventually... Change the fluid, it probably needs it.

It does, the OD is working fine. I was just making sure 3k at 70 was normal. It does shift funny though. Coming out of first it shifts fine, but when shifting out of 2nd and 3rd it will rev to like 3.5 - 4k before I have to let off and it will shift. Ive checked the kick down cable and the OD solenoid which are fine so I don't know what else it could be

flush your transmission and refill with fresh Dex Merc III ATF (I like the Castrol Import Multivehcile stuff specified for older Toyotas, as your AW7x *is* an older Toyota transmission

Corton, those late shifts you describe sound like something typically caused by an overstretched down shift cable... Make sure it is not! You say you "checked" it but I think that's your problem...
