Just bought a 1995 960 that runs great but has a heavy gasoline smell coming from the air conditioner on initial start up and after idling. Any ideas?

 

I have noticed that as well with my 960. I had that problem with my 740 at times as well. I believe it has to do with a vacuum line leak somewhere. These cars have a charcoal canister under the hood, maybe it needs to be replaced. May have lost it's ability to filter out that odor.

 

I have a 93 that had the same issue. It turned out to be the rubber portion of the filler neck on the gas tank. If you look in the trunk you will see a small plate you can remove around the center of the floor of the trunk. It is an inspection plate. Take a flashlight and look for any signs of dry rot in the rubber, a broken clamp, or any visible leaks. I had to find out the hardway at the gas pump. I was pumping gas and noticed a little river running out from under the car. It would not leak when using a gas can to pour in fuel, but the pressure of the pump sure made a mess.

The way to get at is it to drop the fuel tank. I took it to a semi competent mechanic who was able to take care of the repair. If you have a lift and can get the tank down, changing the hose is simple, a couple clamps and you are done.

Finally tracked down the problem in my 960. It was a small vacuum elbow that connected near the MAF. The under side of the elbow had a hole in it about the size of the small vacuum tube. The elbow cost like $11 at my stealer (see, that's why I don't like them) but I'm sure it could be had somewhere else for $3.
