Our 96 960 wagon has been acting-up the last couple of weeks and finally conked-out.

Starting was slow and seemed to be the battery getting weak so I was on the way to get a new one and when coming to a stop the car stalled and when I tried to restart it all I got was a rapid clicking and then the alarm system started to go crazy.

A state trooper was nice enough to try a jump but no luck. Then after sitting with the flashers on for an hour waiting for the tow truck, when I went to try again, there was absolutely nothing.

I put a new battery in and still absolutely nothing.

Any help is greatly welcomed.

 

Assuming that new battery is good, you need to check the battery ground, and make sure it is tightened on the post, on the other end. If this is good, I open Wiring Diagrams and check maxi-fuxes.

 

The next thing to consider is the fuel pump assuming you have spark and the engine is turning over with the new battery .

 

if the battery is good and you are getting clicking, i would look at the connections. CLEAN all major connections. battery to body, both ends, body to engine. check the "start" wire at the starter. make sure it is getting all the power to pull in the solenoid.

 

Had similar problem and the second positive lead that attaches to the bolt on top of the terminal with aconnector had broken off and slid down by side of the battery.If our battery goes too low alarm goes crazy and have to rset it with the remote before starting againso make sure alarm is deactivated.

 

car alarms are VERY BAD! when worked at an auto electric repair shop, they were more problems than they were worth, except to the shop that made money from them.

if you have an aftermarket car alarm, usually someone hacks into the start wire to the starter to put in a relay. i have seen very bad connections at that relay that will limit the power to the starter to pull in the solenoid.
the solenoid requires a lot of power to pull in. adding resistance (connectors), is never a good thing.

 

fuel pump. happened to mine 97 @ 137K miles

 

a FP does not keep it from turning over.
