If the car is a V70, are you sure it's not a 1998? Also, is the car turbo?
Will all NO STARTS and dies, the 2 main thing to check is spark and fuel pressure. Has anything lead up to this or is it a all the sudden problem?
All of the sudden stall & no start situations can be a cam sensor problem but these cars usually have fuel pressure problems with the age, miles usually do not matter. So, when you try to start it, hold the key for about 8 seconds. When you let the key go, listen real hard for the fuel pump whinning for about 2 seconds after you let the key go. If you do not hear the fuel pump (which is in the tank) you likely have a fuel relay gone bad or a bad fuel pump. You can jump the relay to get it started but if that isn't the problem you will have to ts some more. If you have no spark check the cam sensor.

i'm pretty sure its a 97 and its a 2.5 non turbo sold new in the UK
the car just died this mornning after about a mile
it turns over and runs for about a second then dies
also cant get it out of "w" on the buttons by the gear shift

I really wouldn't worry about the W on the transmission preformance selector. That is usually a problem with the PNP switch but I don't remember that causing the car to stall, just not start.
