Default 1996 960 timing question.

Hello everyone,
I have been reading about timing my recently purchased 96 960.
The guy I bought it from got confused while doing a head gasket on it and sold it to me for $500 bucks. I bought the new belt, idlers and tensioner but do not have the cam or crank tools. I have been looking at the cam tool and it looks like it just holds the cams horizontally. can someone thathas this tool explain how it works? Also..the crankshaft pully nut was missing so my timing mark may be off on it. Is there a mark on the shaft as well? can I set the crank on tdc? I can see the mark on the cams,so if the cams just need to be horizontal i can check if my marks are good or remove cam pully and rotate 1/3 . any help is appreciated . a closeup picture of the tool would be awesome.
Thanks,
Bob in Dallas aka bigdummy

If you line up all 3 timing marks and put the belt on you should be fine. There is a mark on the inside of the crank timing pulley that should match up with the mark on the block.

Make sure you crank it over by hand before trying to start it.

I tried just lning up the marks but apparently the exhaust cam pully was removed and put on 2/3 out of rotation.pulled off cam sensor to look at metal half cup in there.
I rotated it to horizontal with the larger part on the bottom.
Now the engine will turn by hand without hitting anything.
Will try to start it up tomorrow. I sure would like a closeup of that alignment tool.
Thanks for the help and Happy Fathers day to all the Fathers out there.

Tried to fire it up last night.
It sputtered like it might but i pulled #1 coil pack and it seemed to fire at the wrong time. Will try to spin the cams 180 degrees and see if it helps.
The back of the cams have an offset half moon a good picture of the tool would help immensely.

It runs!
The small part of the half moon goes up on the intake cam and down on the exhaust cam... some info that no one seems to know.

Sorry I have been away. They needed to be horizontal with the one offset up and one down.
