The symptoms you describe suggest:
1) Transmission fluid is low, or
2) Transmission rebuild may be coming up.

Sounds like #1 is covered, so I'd find a transmission shop you trust and ask for a diagnosis.

Sorry.

My impression is that these transmissions are pretty bulletproof. Anyone else have an opinion? You might look into getting a trannie from a wrecking yard if you can find a donor car w/about 150K, that is clearly there because of body damage. Get VIN, check the Carfax for service history, and take your chances--I think they might be pretty good. Easier and cheaper to drop and install donor trannie than do a rebuild. Change filter, ATF, and off you go!

There is no drain hole for the TC. You can either:

a- drain + fill, or
b- flush.

I think you have done all you need to do.

Tranny problems on my 960 were traced to the neutral gear selector switch on the side of the transmission. (Open up the switch, clean and replace old dielectric grease, re-streach two springs, and carefully regrind contacts flat.) With my 1995 960, my main problems stemmed from 17 year old electrical connnections with the switch connector on the other side of transmission. That connector is part of the switch assembly and the wiring harness connector only comes with a new wiring harness. I cut them off and replaced them with two standard 4-wire trailer connectors to connect up the 8 wires. Works pretty good.
I've been advised not to even try to drain the torque converter since it's VERY difficult to properly bleed out all the air. Running it not properly bled can do damage.
NAPA has a product that does rejuvenate torque converters - Dr. Tranny; $9 US. It's a chemical that eliminated my TC shudder completely. Good luck.

Those connectors are underneath the Heater Valve, which is known to leak. Connector should have really been covered / protected. Tie a plastic bag around it and root-cause is eliminated.
