Default '89 760 Replacing Ignition Cylinder

The key (singular - the other one was lost in a fire) for our 760 is too worn to use as a template to have another key cut. I've been looking at the posts about replacing the ignition cylinder. Because my problem is with the key being worn, I would need to replace all of the locks.

We also have a '86 740 and 95' 940, both with regular keys.

I'm wondering if anyone has replaced all of the locks with ones that use regular keys. Is it even possible or do I have to go with the ones made for the 1989 model year?

You can try to get the 760 key from the Volvo dealer by the CODE which they can pull from the VIN number on your car... should be in the their database. it is not that expensive, around $25 last time I did it, some 6 mts ago... Then again, they may not have it.

The locks are definitely all replaceable with any 740/940 locks EXCEPT for the ignition --that lock is unique and unlike the 740/940 type. That has to use another High Security lock/key. If that's screwed up and beyond repair (as the insides just explode and need to drill them out), you need another cylinder with the key. All 960 and 850 use them so they are not hard to find used. Try ebay or a junkyard if comfortable with DIY. An auto locksmith can do it easily too...
