Hi my name is Bret I'm new here. I got a '96 960 a few years ago that had been very well taken care of. It literally looked like new. The only trouble I've had is 5/6 ignition coils went out in that time. Not a big deal to replace but not cheap parts. Oh yeah and the typical fuel rail end cap leak which I already fixed.

I have a new gas leak and am going to try replacing the injector O-rings. That ought to do it.

The reasons I'm writing are the door position thingy, I don't know the name but it makes your door stay part way open when you want it to. You don't really appreciate this feature until its gone. Its really making me crazy. There is supposed to be a metal u shaped deal that some roller mechanisms ride on. The u shaped thing snapped off. Are these welded to the door jamb? It looks like they are.

The other problem is a loud whirring when I start the car that goes away after 10 minutes but also goes away every time I push on the gas. When I let up on the gas it comes back. I had the serpentine belt replaced fairly recently, maybe that was done incorrectly? I'll check the power steering fluid level too, maybe that. Maybe a bearing in the engine? I hope not.

The position thingy is the door hinge. All the mechanical geniuses that service these cars never see to it to dab a little oil or grease so the U spring won't break; well, they can't charge for that so why do it?

Anyway, the hinge has to come off, and be replaced. You can just replace the U spring but it is not available by itself. The good news is that that hinge is the same on all 7/9 series Volvos from 1983 til 1998 so many used ones out there, cheap! More good news, the rear door hinge is the same so I usually get a rear door one--much less wear on those.

The noise, may be from the secondary air injection pump, your car is an '96 so I think it has one. It only works when the car is cold at start up, for a few minutes, then stops...
