Default Door hinge

My drivers door swings freely because the "staple" that interacts with the two rollers on the door hinge is cracked. I've tried looking for just this part but it looks like I have to replace the whole hinge. Does that sound right? It seems like it should be a cheap fix, not a whole new hinge.

Understand this is something that can lead to much more significant repair of the door frame if not addressed due to the weight of the door swinging free, so will buy the whole hinge if that is really necessary.

Thanks

yeah, pretty sure you need to replace the whole hinge. which isn't easy as the door will need to be re-aligned.

You can replace only the "staple", no big deal! You can get the hinge at any junk yard for next to nothing--they won't sell you the staple only... BTW, get the hinge from the REAR door. They are the same and the one from the rear will have a lot less wear.

The alignment is no big deal after the swap as you will need to remove the kick panel to access the three hinge bolts anyway. Support the door under the edge with a floor jack, use a helper (it helps), and then LUBRICATE, people, lubricate! Every Volvo I see has those hinges rusty and squealing like a dungeon door--no wonder they break! They are supposed to be lubricated in the course of regular maintenance, then they'll never break.

Lev's technique works. I have done it with a junkyard hinge. It looks like it will be a daunting task but it wasn't bad and then I had a door with an working door check. It feels good after your done and the door stays put.

The hinge is perfect, minus the broken staple thing so I didn't want to just start futzing around with it without asking around first. I've just been careful about not letting the door swing uncontrolled.

Thanks

Take a trip to your nearest Pick n Pull, there should be some 240 there. Get a left rear door hinge, better the whole thing, not just the "staple" because there are these little embedded half moon shims between the staple and the actual hinge and they can be a a little fiddly. Anyway, the price would be the same, and you'd be avoiding potential headache by not separating the hinge.

Thanks, I will grab the whole thing, good to have options.

The more I look, it looks like swapping the whole thing may not be much harder than just replacing the one piece. It doesn't look like there is good access to that part while it is on the car.

I'll be going to the yard again Monday. You want me to grab a hinge for you? I need one, myself.

Thanks for the offer, but I think I will try to find one myself. Removing it may be helpful in the replacing it process, letting me experiment a bit on the junkyard car.
