Replacing the head on my '93 960- wondering is there something I need to do to the hydraulic lifters before I install? Someone mentioned I need to bleed them? How is this done and is it necessary?

 

I think with older style lifters one could pump them up with some oil to get them up and running quickly.

But the lifters in your engine have a much smaller internal piston stroke so it may not be possible.

What I ended up doing was to squirt a little oil in to the small hole in the side, but only a drop or two at best made it in.

The engine will be quite loud until oil pressure builds and forces the trapped air out.

Good luck, makes sure you clean any oil off of the oil passages before sealing the head top. The Volvo manual directs to coat one part, not both the bottom and the top, concern of too much sealing goop blocking an oil passage, but had no oil leaks when I did both parts. Do have a couple of weepers now but last time only did one surface.

Soak them in ATF before you install them.
