Default Broken interior door handle

Hello guys.

I am sorry that I am asking a question as soon as I registered myself but I couldn't find any information and I am planning on getting the part tomorrow morning. My 1996 960`s interior door handle just broke. As I said earlier I am planning on hitting junk yards tomorrow but I am wondering if the only compatible part is from a 960 or some other Volvo`s parts (like S70 or V70) will fit too. I am attaching a picture that shows which part I am talking about but the broken part is on the passenger side if that makes any difference.

Thank you very much in advance.

is the actual inside handle itself broken or does the handle not open the door? only reason i ask is because the part that usually breaks on these cars is actually on the outer door handle and the door wont open from the outside {ive done two on my wagon.}..lol

as far as what handle will and wont fit....ill let someone with much more knowledge answer that buddy....good luck

The actual handle is broken unfortunately... One of my friends broke it when he was trying to open the door. Right now the door panel doesn't have that little interior handle on it

Go here, get the part number and order it there or from FCP or Tasca Parts.

If you click on the part number it will give you what other vehicles and years that part is used in.

Hey thanks a lot for the help. I went to the junk yard yesterday and was lucky enough to find a door handle. However it seemed like the handle is kind of attached to the panel and I coulnd't get it remove. Do I need to get the whole panel or what

Welcome to the forum. I have replaced my drivers side handle. Mine would still open the door, but the handle did not return to "Home" position on its own. There was a small spring broken that returned the handle to it's home position.

I guess you found out about the clips on the bottom of the door? It has been a few years since I did this, the key to getting it out is a rivet that attaches the cable assembly to the inner frame. You have to drill it out and use a large sheet metal screw to fasten the replacement assy. back. Someone posted the instructions from Volvo on the handle replacement, if I still have them saved them I will P.M you.

BTW: My drivers seat (1997 965 same color interior) looks like yours. Do you know about the timing belt on these engines? I will change mine early, a broken timing belt on these engines is catastrophic.

Good Luck

Fred

Seems like a really bad design. I too ran to the junk yard to pull off a good handle...only to find out it's riveted onto the door! I ended up leaving empty handed...so you're saying you have to drill it out? Any other way besides doing it that way?

Yep, you have to drill that big rivet(s) out. I don't remember if there is more than one. You will need to acquire a really big sheet metal screw to fasten the assy. to the door frame. It is not a bad job.

Good Luck

BTW. Any really strange electrical problems consider the ignition switch.

Hi Fred,

I have the same problem w/ the door handle 1994 960 Wagon, I didnt know it was possible but i pulled the handle to put something in back seat - i dont know if pulled too hard or too fast - but when i tryed to open it again -- there is no tension, the handle just goes all the way down --- it doesnt stop halfway like the others, you said you did this twice- will I have to take whole door panel off? Do you still have the instructions..If so can you please pass on to me thanks.
