does it run at all?? The timing belt is a big item that needs to be replaced every 70k. If it broke, it's going to have more problems than just a blown headgasket. Some these early year 960s also had a problem with porous blocks, which lead to blown headgaskets. Get as much service info as you can, and if it does in fact just need a headgasket it will be a great car. I have a 93 with 212,000miles on it and I just got back from a 3,500 mile trip which I averaged between 22mpg (worst) and almost 27mpg (best)

luckily the timing belt didnt break and just the headgasket went, the car has 194k on it but i know it has a lot of life left it, and with being as clean as it is and being a 1 owner car i figured I'd save it, otherwise the junkyard wouldve just parted it out.

for $600 go for it then. If you do the work yourself, it shouldn't be too much to take care of the headgasket

When I replaced my TB, it came with the reccommended interval of 30k miles. Also, you might want to have a head shop check out your head and make sure it's not warped or cracked. The shop I used charged me 200. New headbolts, spring for them. The bolts are a torque-to-yield and once used, they are stretched. One tool you will need is a degree indicator. The headbolts get turned a given amount of degrees for the final tightening. I just replace all my valves in mine in Feb. and then two weeks later drove it 1,000 miles without any issues.
