Default Can I Swap A 93 Engine Into A 96?

Hi, could really use some help here, I have a 1996 Volvo 960 with a bad motor, I can get a nice 1993 960 motor cheap. I notice some external differences. As one is an OBD I motor, and the 1996 is an OBD II, is swapping them just a matter of changing sensors, and the valve cover? I see the 96 has a tube going into the valve cover between cyl 3 & 4, that the 93 doesn't have. Any help would be appreciated, they're holding the engine for me til close of business today.

Thanks in advanc

Can you grab the donor ecu and harness? That could make it a drop in.

I don't think this can be done well, besides the ecu and wire harness, you are going to have complications with the EGR system, the 93 probably does not have one. Not sure if you can get away with that in california, what is wrong with the current engine? Is it tired? Or had a timing belt break? The cams are different also between engines, so the ECM is critical.

DanR '94 964 394,000 miles (160,000 on the new engine) from a '91

I've just put a 94 engine into a 96.It already had the 28 mm timing sprockets.I transferred the injectors, the coils and spark plugs, also the wire harness but have not got it to lightup yet. The wire harness has an extra plug in the control box on a 96.I did it in situ, DON"T do that,It's a bitch.I put in new rear seals on the cam and crank. The crank seal was not easy,it has a lot of interference. And it was not cheap
