Failed fuel pump
I had been experiencing a bucking or jerking of my car most noticeable in third gear when getting close to switching to fourth gear, especially when driving with a light pedal and going up a slight grade.
This started I guess about 6-8 weeks ago. It got worse after hot weather started.
Just prior to this, I had bragged on here about how much better my car shifted and accelerated after having the trans fluid flushed and for the first time replaced with synthetic fluid, which was true. Then it wasn't too many weeks after that, when this bucking began and I thought maybe it was transmission related. My Volvo mechanic had looked at the car previously for this bucking or jerking issue and he couldn't put his finger on it.
I had the fuel filter replaced, there was some debris on there so it definitely needed it. But the rough running and so on was getting worse. Then suddenly a week ago the car quit as I was pulling away form an intersection. Fortunately I was near a service station and was able to coast backwards to the station, where an experienced mechanic came out to give me a hand. He had me try to start it, he said it appeared to be low/no fuel pressure. I left the car with him until he could get to it several days later, instead of having it towed about 45 miles to my mechanic's house.
I ordered a Bosch pump, took it to the mechanic 2 days later, and after a few more days he installed it. I got the car back and wow, it runs perfectly, at least as good as ever. And it's back to shifting perfectly under all circumstances. So, it was some sort of fuel issue from the fuel pump that was causing it to act in such a strange manner.
Very relieved and very pleased.
