Hey everybody...the weather is getting better here in Michigan, and it will be time to insure the Volvo 760 here shortly. Unfortunately, no one seems to have an idea of what she's worth.

Here are the particulars. It's a 1987 Volvo 760 Turbo with 43,000 actual miles on it. It's a North Carolina car that has never seen the snow. It was trucked to Michigan, and then spent 15 years in a climate controlled garage, being started every 6 months or so.

The car was virtually perfect when I bought it. The climate control system did not work, and it turned out that the program controller had failed. I was able to get one NOS and had it installed by my local Volvo dealer. Once this was in, I had the AC system converted to 134a.

The radio amplifier did not work, and I had it repaired.

It gets a the headliner recovered next spring.

It's difficult to tell that the car is not new. The interior looks new...black seats, dark grey carpet. The dash is not cracked, and has not been in the sun for 15 years. I even have the original Volvo branded cassette cleaner, and the original Volvo On Call key fob (No 6638).

I have always used Hagerty, but no one seems to have any idea what she's worth. One company said it was worth $5,000, one said $12,000, and one said $20,000 based on the fact that there are very few low-mileage turbos out there.

I'm at a loss here. No idea at all.

Any suggestions? Hegarty asked me to send lots of photos in, and they called back and said that they would be happy to insure it for what ever I wanted to insure it for, the car was so nice. Here are a couple photos taken with my phone.

that is an absolute beautiful car....i am jealous.....personally i have seen mid 90's high mileage volvos go for around 5k.....that being said something with less miles then my 2012 wrangler.....id put it at 14/16k. it looks perfect. Best of luck on the issue.

ps try searching ebay, craigslist for cars around the age with same mileage. that should get you into a ball park.

 

Thank you. I have been looking around for a while, and while I have found a couple of low-mile 6's, no Turbos. I think they get used...

I agree with you...will probably put a value on of 16K based on the difficulty of finding another one.

You know about worth, it is what someone will pay for it... I doubt anyone would pay more than $5-7k for this car, I know people will argue that point but it is just not a very desirable model.

 

I agree. I know it handles better than a 200 series, and is faster, and easier to work on, and is a more comfortable. Overall, it's a better, safer car. Of course, it's much more modern than a 200 series car...

Still, the 200 series cars are cooler.

The 140 series cars are even cooler than the 200 series cars are cooler still...

The 164 cars are even cooler than the 140 series cars...

The P1800's are the coolest of all! I still miss my P1800ES! Should have never sold a rust-free car for a big Benz S-class...

I love 164, but COOL they are not! Try selling one, nobody wants them; people all talk but when it comes to "hobby" cars, very different story when it is time to pay money for one, sad but true...
P1800, yeah, it is definitely the one everybody wants, and it shows in the money they bring.

 

I would pay really good money for a nice 164 pre-'73.

Sadly, I have been looking for a number of years, and have not found one. My "hobby" car is a '72 Fiat 124 Coupe, which just received a bare-shell repaint. Very cool car...dual-overhead cam, 4-wheel disk brakes, 5-speed, body design by a guy famous for Ferraris, engine by a guy famous for doing Ferrari engines (the first DOHC engine to use a cogged belt instead of a chain).

I will probably sell it off because my bride likes to be a little more comfortable going to shows, etc...

$3500 is probably all that someone would pay. Any way that you cut it, it is an older car not in high demand.

It's simple, really. You bet that you'd have an accident, or some misfortune, while the insurance company bets that you wouldn't. The premium you pay is directly determined by how strongly either party believes its chances which is determined by statistics on the insurance company's part.

I have an 86 760TI with 126k on the clock. Red Block in-line 4 and an Intercooled Turbo. Have seen only one other similar car for sale and it wasn’t on the market long. Absolutely love my car and doubt I will ever sell it.

 

As with any old car condition is the key! Even a Ford Pinto if immaculate will be worth $10K, someone wants it for nostalgia. A perfect 760 may be worth around $5k... Hard to say but Volvo people are cheap; some 240s are starting to bring some serious money (over 10k) but it's still rare occurrence.
