Hi-

I'm new here, and I have a question about rear suspension. I understand that earlier 960's came with solid rear axles, and newer ones came with independent rear suspension- but what is the difference between independent rear and multi-link suspension, and how do I know which one I have on mine? It's a 97 960.....

Bottom line is what I am really looking for is to replace the rear brake rotors and pads, but it supposedly matters what suspension you have....

 

Ok, so the answer is that there is no difference- multi link and independent suspension are one and the same thing.

Multi link is independant both sides have control arm and C/V axles. Your will have that.
Solid axle is a solid tube. Which was pretty much done away with in late 1993 or 1994.

 

Yes, but I was asking about the difference between multi-link and independent, not multi link and solid. Several parts houses list pads that would lead you to believe that there are 3 types- multi link, independent and solid.

In reality there is only solid axle on the early ones and multi link (which is independent) on the later ones. I ended up with the right ones by looking at them first before going to get the new ones.
