Default Oil Usage

My 95' 960 uses about 1/2 qt oil after 1,000 miles after an oil change and then about another 1/2 qt by the next oil change. I change every 3,000 miles, so this is about a qt. or so every 3,000 miles. The car runs great and has been well maintaned, no smoke or anything. Had the flame trap changed. It was black but not too bad, that didn't help. Any suggestions. I asked the Volvo dealership and they said that's not bad, it's just an old car, but I don't buy that. What do you guys think? I know the oil has always been changed because most of the papers are there.

No blow by?
What type of engine oil do you use?

I use valvoline. I haven't checked for "blow by" by checking under the engine cap when the car is running, but when I googled blow by it said there would be oil in the air cleaner. I checked my air cleaner and found no sign of oil.

sign of oil in the air filter is the severe case of blow by
even if blow by is severe, it might not happen.

I guess you use regular engine oil.
Have you thought about synthetic?

They churn out oil and fuel additives. They are popular. You don't find them at aftermarket stores but you can find them at dealers. They are not associated with any car companies but car companies utilize their products when they do services.

you're welcome

I'm not sure what else to do regarding oil burning if bg products and synthetic do not work.

I ordereda flame trap by the way.

If you don't replace it, and if it is clogged, you might incur high pressure in the crankcase and it will lead to leaks everywhere, especially with volvo.

My 96 960 does the same thing when a high mileage oil is not use. The additives seem to stop the burning.I've been using Havoline High mileage(the shop that use to service my car in Atl started me on this and it has worked ever since).
